Beijing time on December 5th news, according to the Automotive News Network, Volkswagen Group expects that after the introduction of the next generation of gasoline and diesel vehicles in 2026, the era of internal combustion engines will gradually end.
Traditional automakers are facing increasing pressure from regulators to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to cope with climate change, prompting Volkswagen to switch to electric vehicles.
Michael Jost, Volkswagen's eponymous brand strategy leader, said at an industry conference near Wolfsburg's corporate headquarters in Germany on Tuesday: "Our colleagues are working to provide the last platform for carbon dioxide-emitting cars. We are gradually reducing the internal combustion engine to a minimum."
The Volkswagen Group has started to launch its first electric vehicles, including next year's Porsche Taycan. It is expected that its 12 car brands will launch approximately 15 million electric vehicles, as the company expects to spend $50 billion over the next five years to switch to self-driving electric vehicles.
The production of the Volkswagen ID Neo hatchback will begin in Germany within 12 months, followed by other models producing ID. As of 2020, it will assemble production lines at two factories in China. Volkswagen plans to launch a fully or partially electric version of the lineup of more than 300 cars, trucks, trucks and motorcycles by 2030.
"full commitment"
Volkswagen will continue to improve its internal combustion engine technology after launching a new platform in the next decade. According to Joost, after 2050, there may still be some gasoline and diesel models in areas with insufficient charging infrastructure.
The Volkswagen executives believe that urban diesel pollution can be solved with cleaner engines, but in the long run, the bigger threat is carbon dioxide emissions, which can cause global warming.
At the industry conference organized by the German Business Daily, Joost pointed out that the Paris Climate Agreement requires speeding up the introduction of vehicles that reduce or eliminate harmful emissions, and it is "completely committed" to this goal.
The strategy leader of Volkswagen's last version of the diesel car, Volkswagen, said on Tuesday that the German car manufacturer's core brand will develop the last generation of cars using internal combustion engine technology in 2026.
The 2015 diesel emissions cheating scandal forced the automaker to pay more than 27 billion euros in fines for hiding too much pollution, after which Volkswagen shifted its strategy to battery-powered cars.
Jost announced at the Handelsblatt Automotive Summit in Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany: "The last generation of the internal combustion engine platform will be launched in 2026."
A spokesperson confirmed that Jost’s remarks mean that Volkswagen, as the best-selling passenger car brand in Europe and China, will focus on electric vehicles.
Joost pointed out that Volkswagen will continue to adjust its gasoline and diesel engine vehicles to meet environmental standards during their service life, but the German automaker is now committed to radical measures to prevent global warming.
Josh said that as a way to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, Volkswagen has changed its vehicle development benchmark to achieve the goal of significantly reducing carbon dioxide pollution levels.
